HEEDS Connection Error Messages

Answers to questions regarding the error messages in HEEDS. Remember to always logout of HEEDS.

STUDENTS

Students are not allowed here at this time.

The Registrar disallowed non-editor roles from logging in, so that faculty, chairs, deans, staff, admins have exclusive use of HEEDS. This is useful during grade entry period or after self-enlistment period. This would be the time to run the mirror so that students can still see their info.

Failed login - Username/Password combination not found.

The student number you entered is not in the list of active students, or you entered the wrong password. In the first case, only the Registrar can help you. In the second case, your password can be sent to the e-mail address you supplied in your info page; click the 'Send password' button. If you forgot the e-mail address or if you did not supply a valid one, only the Registrar can help you.

Failed login - too many attempts. Try again tomorrow.

There is a MAX_LOG_IN_ATTEMPTS (currently 5). This number of consecutive failed log in attempts will lock out the user for the day. The counter will reset when the date changes. Somebody might be trying to guess the user's password.

Failed login - user has an ongoing session. Last activity was ... minutes ago.

A user is still logged in, and the user (or someone pretending to be the user) attempts to log in. Maybe the user did not log out before closing his/her browser. This situation will be resolved after a few minutes - HEEDS automatically logs out users who have been idle for some period of time (set by Registrar, default 30 minutes).

User is not logged in.

This happens when a user is looking at a page for too long (or went to the bathroom) such that the user was automatically logged out due to inactivity. When the user clicks a link on the page, user will get this error.

NON-STUDENTS

Failed login - Username/Password combination not found.

(Self-explanatory)

Failed login - too many attempts. Try again tomorrow.

(As above for STUDENTS)

Failed login - user has an ongoing session. Last activity was ... minutes ago.

(As above for STUDENTS)

Failed request - user is not logged in.

(As above - "User is not logged in" for STUDENTS)

Failed request - user is logged in at another IP address.

User logged in from one IP address and HEEDS received a request from the user at another IP address or from another device. This may happen to mobile users when their mobile network releases the initial IP due to inactivity. When the user clicks another link, the network will assign a different IP address. Or, somebody might be trying the hijack the user's session from another device.
